Just about everyone knows how much we love Bea and her (herniated) belly button. Unfortunately, the vet wasn't as fond of it as we were; she found that the "stuff" that was coming through (I know - "what 'stuff'?") was gradually increasing. So, our little five month-old had her first surgery yesterday. She was a real trooper, putting up with a full day at the vet's, the anaesthetic, the trachial tube, the internal stitches - though she wasn't the least bit pleased that she had to fast for 12 hours before the surgery. She has a way of banging on the cabinet. No subtleties.
Normally she would have to wear a cone around her head to keep her from licking, but our little bumble Bea is a little too porky to be able to reach her own belly.
So, bye bye belly button. We'll miss you, but we know you'll always be there, on the inside...

Poor bumble bea. She doesn't look to impressed. I know that she will be getting some extra cuddle time to make up for it though! And what a dent that must have made in your wallets!

Yea, Bea is brave. It really didn't seem to bother her at all, and there wasn't any resentment afterwards that we'd left her there alone all day at the vet's mercy.
And it wasn't as expensive as we'd feared, thank goodness.
The weird thing is that the belly button bump still seems to be visible - I'm not sure if it's just that her "guts" are now shaped that way, or if the internal stitching didn't hold or something. I'll be talking to the vet on Monday morning. Hopefully it's nothing, but you know us, we're worriers.
Just an update on Bea: the vet says the bump is just the suture knot, which they tie really big so it won't come apart. Should disappear in a week or two.
Could have told us that earlier...
So happy that all went well. She's a tough cookie that Bea.

awww bea...I hope she is all better now. It is a common procedure, usually with no complications. She will be back to her normal bouncy self in no time. Any questions let me know..

Ha, Chery, the problem was she was back to her bouncy self the minute we picked her up at the vet's following the surgery! We were afraid she would tear open her stitches (luckily she didn't). The instructions included things like "leash walks only for a week", etc. Bea doesn't do little leash walks. She does runways and speedbumps and flying leaps of puppy teeth.
But we love her...
