Good Parenting

This is your first glimpse at our new property. 10 acres of privacy, mix of rock, trees, open areas, level, rolling. Canadian Shield at its best. Which means it's also a mess. Especially since the seller had cleared out a lot of trees, leaving leaves and limbs sprawled out all over the place. When we first saw the property we said it looked like tree burial grounds, or a tree battlefield. The poor trees... But, since the dead ones are already dead, we had to get rid of them to tidy up the property and make it a little more presentable. Two full days of carrying and burning, carrying and burning. We probably got about 5% of the work done - it's a very, very, very big job - not just branches, also spiky plants, rocks and boulders, piles of wood chips, piles of stumps, you name it. We made a bonfire in a hole in the ground that had been excavated, so it was safe and surrounded by water from all the recent rain. The heat was intense, but as you can see it didn't bother Heidi much. She seemed neither attracted nor repelled by the fire. She just wanted to be where we were and chew sticks. We like to think that we would make fairly relaxed parents.

wouldn't it make sense to save the wood for your wood burning stove?

Ha. I think it would have to be -100C for 100 years to get us through that much wood.

But, we do plan on cutting up the larger felled trees into wood stove wood if I can get dad to let me use one of the two chainsaws I gave him.

And bonfires are a lot more fun. And dangerous. And fun.
