Well, Heidi's eye isn't healing on its own, despite meticulous medical care and constant protection from Beatrice's enthusiastic but aggressive love. So today she's back at the vet for surgery. They're performing a keratectomy, which - as I understand it - involves shaving the corneal layer of the eye. There is a deep hole in her cornea which was probably started by her entropic eyelids, which we were treating for 2 weeks prior to her accident with the chair (she also had surgery a couple of weeks ago to treat that), and then the chair incident probably gouged out a much larger piece of her eye. The vet doesn't seem confident that this will entirely fix the problem, but it is at least one step toward the ultimate goal of saving her eye. We are looking forward to Heidi being back to her old self again. The poor girl has had far too many surgeries in her almost 4 years of life.
Of course, her eye problem hasn't stopped her from getting wet and muddy when she gets the chance. It's probably the last thing she should be doing right now considering the circumstances, but happiness and exercise are as important as any medical care she could receive, in my opinion.
