We recently took Heidi and Bea swimming at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Although Heidi is an experienced swimmer who has long since graduated from her life jacket, it was Bea's first real swimming experience. The life jacket came in handy and gave her enough confidence to really get in there and go for it. I highly recommend these doggy life jackets. Bea swam back and forth between Sharon and me for practice, and eventually she swam great distances with me by her side cheering her on. She kind of bee-lined it. I'm not sure she knows how to turn in the water yet. All in all, we are very proud of her. She's got guts. Takes after her older sister.Tuesday, August 28, 2007
Our brave little Bea
We recently took Heidi and Bea swimming at Grandma and Grandpa's house. did she like the water right away, or was she fearful?
henry seems to be absolutely terrified of the water. getting him near bodies of water, or to have baths, is quite the struggle.
At first she was a little skeptical. "You want me to do what??" And even swimming now, she looks terrified. But she just keeps on coming back out in the water the minute you leave her on the shore. Same with Heidi. At first Heidi was leery, but now we can't keep her out. I think (though every pug is different) that a lot of it has to do with reassuring them that swimming is safe and fun. This is where the lifejacket comes in handy. Pugs swimming on their own are liable to sink. And of course, it takes a lot of coaxing the first time. In the end, it seems their need to be by your side, even when you're in the middle of a lake, wins out over their fear of water. And then constant delight and encouragement. And then good luck keeping them dry.
I'll never forget when we were going out on the little motorboat, a little ways from the shore, and we see Heidi's head bobbing in the water as she's swimming towards the boat.
